Trinity Basketball holds the distinction of being Ireland’s oldest college basketball club. From early matches played in local halls and sports centres to
competing at the highest national levels, our club has shaped generations of players and left an enduring legacy in Irish basketball.
Explore our rich history and discover how Trinity Basketball continues to make its mark.
The year 1945 marked the establishment of the Amateur Basketball Association of Ireland (ABAI), paving the way for the inception of the first College clubs and Intervarsity Competitions in 1946. Among the pioneering teams was Trinity (Dublin University), which emerged as one of the earliest contenders. Throughout the 1940s and 1950s, Trinity, along with University College Dublin, the Royal College of Surgeons, Queens University of Belfast, and University College Galway, boasted prominent college teams. The culmination of their efforts came in 1951 when these five schools participated in the inaugural National Intervarsity Championship Tournament held at the Portobello Barracks in Dublin.
In tracing the rich history of Trinity basketball, we unearthed a treasure trove of newspaper clippings dating back to its establishment in 1946. These clippings serve as windows into the past, documenting the triumphs, challenges, and enduring spirit of the team throughout the decades. From thrilling victories to hard-fought battles, each article encapsulates a chapter in the illustrious journey of Trinity basketball.
As we continue to delve into this archive, we invite members of the Trinity community, past and present, to contribute their own memories, anecdotes, and memorabilia. Whether you were a player, a coach, or a dedicated fan, your unique perspective adds depth and richness to our collective history. Please share your stories with us via email at [email address], as we strive to preserve and celebrate the legacy of Trinity basketball for generations to come.
A University Pink is one of Trinity College Dublin’s highest sporting honours. It recognises exceptional athletes who have excelled in representing the university, often at national or international level, and who have made significant contributions to their sport and the college community. Receiving a Pink is a mark of both sporting achievement and dedication.
Alumni are the heart and soul of Trinity Basketball. We appreciate their unwavering support and dedication, both at home and on the road.
