Colours is one of Trinity College's most treasured sporting traditions—a fierce yet friendly rivalry played out across countless sports against our historic counterparts, University College Dublin (UCD). After a 25-year hiatus in basketball, Trinity Basketball proudly brought Colours back to the court in 2024, reigniting a
tradition that hadn’t been played since the year 2000.
Last season, we hosted the series right here in Trinity, filling the Sports Centre with electric energy, passionate crowds, and the unmistakable buzz of college pride.
All our teams took part, from Freshers to Development, Women’s, and Men’s squads, making it a true club-wide celebration of competition and camaraderie.
.
The series was fiercely contested, culminating in a best-of-three showdown where UCD ultimately prevailed 2-1. But the results only tell part of the story. Both the Women’s Varsity and Men’s Varsity games went down to the wire, keeping everyone on the edge of their seats until the final buzzer. Meanwhile, the Freshers match was a spectacle in itself—a mixed game featuring our Development teams and extended to six quarters purely for the fun of it,
delivering a fantastic display of skill, creativity, and team spirit.
Off the court, the revival of Colours was just as vibrant. We were thrilled to have multiple sponsors and prizessupporting the event, adding extra excitement for
players and spectators alike. Once the final whistle blew, players and supporters came together for an incredible night out to celebrate,
leaving all the rivalry firmly on the court.
Reigniting the Colours tradition has been a huge milestone for Trinity Basketball, creating memories, building friendships, and deepening the connection between both universities’ sporting communities. We’re already looking forward to the rematch this year, determined to reclaim the series
and continue building this historic rivalry for years to come.
